Where to Start for Private Forest Landowners.
1.
Determine your objectives. Are you wanting advice on how to deal with pests, diseases or wildfire prevention? Having clear objectives in mind will help guide you to the right professionals and resources.
2.
If your interests are informational, we recommend visiting UC Cooperative Extension’s resource library and offerings first. You can also reach out to your county to see if they have resources available for your area.
If you’re looking for direct support in managing your forest, your local Resource Conservation District may have forestry staff that can assist with permitting and/or planning. Click on this link to find an RCD near you.

3.
If you are looking for grants to help manage your forest, a Forest Management Plan (FMP) is oftentimes needed to access public grant resources. To create this plan, you will need to work with a Registered Professional Forester (RPF). (Again, your local RCD may be able to help you.) Consulting fees generally apply when working with a RPF.
To find a RPF near you, you can search on the Board of Forestry’s website that lists all licensed foresters by county here.
